Talborne Organics launches soft rock phosphate fertilisers

Talborne Organics, trusted suppliers of organic growing inputs, launches Soft Rock Phosphate fertilisers to provide a reliable and efficient way to replenish soil phosphorous levels.

May 31, 2023

An estimated 80% of soils in Sub-Saharan Africa are deficient in phosphorous, which is a limiting factor in plants, crops, animal growth and productivity.

The latest addition to Talborne Organics fertilizer range is soft rock phosphate. This is a well-known favourite used by generations of farmers and growers to increase yields and plant health by enriching soils with Phosphate and Calcium levels before planting.

Talborne’ s Soft Rock Phosphate is an effective way to correct soils deficient in phosphorous which reflects our underlying philosophy of ‘Healthy Soil = Healthy Plants = Healthy People.’

We offer 2 options of Soft Rock Phosphate which were selected for their qualities and solubility:

• VITA Rock – Phos – Naturally mined and untreated Phosphate source. Approved Input for Certified Organic growing and farming
• Phosrock 14 – Naturally mined and concentrated Phosphate, for soil health and regenerative farming and growing.

Phosphorous (P) is a major plant nutrient found in every living plant cell. It is essential for healthy plant growth as it is responsible for key plant functions, such as energy transfer, photosynthesis, formation of sugars and starches, and nutrient movement within the plant.

Phosphorous deficiency in plants results in poor root development which means less water and nutrients are available to the plant. Leaf development is retarded, so plants have fewer and smaller leaves, which results in reduced photosynthesis, and limited productivity.

• VITA Rock-Phos is from naturally mined sedimentary Phosphate deposits and an approved input for certified organic growing and farming, by Control Union for EU and US National Organic Standards to meet the assurance of food safety without contaminants and toxins.
• Phosrock 14 is derived from natural deposits, but due to concentrating it is not approved for Organic growing and farming, but suited for soil health, regenerative and Good Agricultural Practice (GAP) farming and growing.

“One of Soft Rock Phosphate’s great benefits is that it is environmentally friendly because it is less water soluble than traditional synthetic phosphate fertilisers, thus reducing leaching, run-off and phosphate pollution in dams and rivers (Eutrophication).”

Soft Rock Phosphate’s benefits are:

• Cost effective phosphate fertilizer with a sustained release over many years.
• Good solubility means that phosphate is quickly available for uptake by the plant.
• Neutral pH & low levels of heavy metals.
• It does not harm soil biology (microbes) like acid treated Phosphate fertilizers do.
• A rich source of calcium and silica which are essential plant nutrients for strong and resilient crop growth.
• Easily spreadable use lime spreaders or band-place.

How to apply Soft Rock Phosphate Fertiliser:

• Broadcast, band-place or incorporate into the Soil, or apply in-row with planting.
• For planting trees and vines, apply directly in the planting hole as it does not burn roots.
• In planted areas broadcast as a top-dressing and till into the soil without disturbing the roots
• Add to compost or growing mediums for a sustained release of phosphate and calcium.
• Apply at any time of the year, preferably 6 weeks prior to key crop growth phases (e.g., early spring)
• Application rate: Should be based on soil or leaf analysis and adjusted according to the crop and yield requirements. It is recommended to get advice from a suitably qualified person. A typical rate is 250kg per ha per annum or until P levels are shown to be adequate through soil analysis.
• Available in 25kg bags, 1 000kg bulk bags
