Q& A with Gerhard Erasmus, the founder of MOZaic Upliftment, the non-profit organisation that founded MOZaic Marula Oil.

Q: Tell us about yourself:
- Where are you from? I was born In Johannesburg, but grew up in smaller towns of SA and 6 years in Belgium.
- Were you in any line of work before what you do now?
- If yes, what lead to the change?
I was exposed to rural Mozambican communities during an outreach by our church Mosaiek Gemeente. At the time studied theology even though I had no ambition to become a senior pastor or work withing the organised church. Many years of outreaches to Mozambique inspired me to start Mozaic Upliftment, a non-profit in 2004. The dream was to do social development projects through local church structures in Mozambique focusing on food security, water security and income generating projects.

Q: Tell us about your product range?
The MOZaic Marula Oil product range consists of different volume bottles that are filled with 100% natural marula oil – nothing else. These bottles were strategically selected for specific target markets and areas of skincare treatments that are addressed by marula oil.

The product range also includes facial and body scrubs with ingredients such as marula oil, marula butter, a hint of rosemary and lemongrass and sand from the Indian ocean (that are found in the body scrub only).

Recently, new products were introduced to our range, which are still 100% natural – just with double the nourishment. There has not been much marketing that were directed at these products, but will commence with targeted campaigns in the new year.

Q: What separates yours from potential competitors, ie what are your unique selling points?
100% Natural marula oil is rich in vitamins, minerals and antioxidants that treat many unwanted skin conditions. It can replace many products in a household, as it is so versatile. Marula oil is a speciality care topical treatment with no harmful chemicals, additives or ingredients to the products.

Q: What kind of consumer marketing do you do?
Our aim is to have agents nationwide, who stock and sell our product range. These include retailers such as Baby Boom and Lemonade as well as smaller retailers, midwives, beauty salons, skincare specialists and women who sell the product range for additional income.

Q: Who is your target consumer market?
Our consumer market can be summed up as people of all ages and skin types. To be more specific, we have products that are target for:
- Women who plan to or are already pregnant, or have already given birth
- Teenagers and adults who suffer from unwanted skin conditions such as acne
- People who suffer from eczema
- Athletes and people who often enjoy the outdoors
- Men, from the moment they start growing beards
- People who wish to give their nails, lips and hair the nourishment it needs to remain strong and healthy
