Becoming Regenerative Organic Certified is a testament to the dedication to constantly improving the quality of wines and preserving land for future generations. Healthy soils and a resilient, naturally balanced ecosystem help our vines grow in a more balanced way and buffer them against climatic extremes.
The Regenerative Organic Certified® accreditation was established in 2017 by a group of experts in soil health, animal welfare, and social fairness collectively called the Regenerative Organic Alliance, or ROA.
The ROC compliance process is based on three pillars, starting with ECOCERT organic certification and Fair for Life ethical labour practice certification. ECOCERT ensures that farming practices are environmentally friendly, while the Fair for Life audits and certification guarantee fair working conditions for farmers and workers involved in the entire production process. The third pillar of Regenerative farming is focused on long term sustainability through continuously improving soil health and promoting biodiversity in and around the vineyard.
A growing but still exclusive group of wineries has earned ROC certification worldwide. Notable certified estates include Tablas Creek Vineyard (Paso Robles, USA), The Donum Estate (Sonoma, USA), Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars (Napa Valley, USA), Inkwell Wines (Australia), and Champagne Telmont (Champagne).
“Being the first South African wine farm to obtain this rigorous certification underscores our belief in the non-negotiable tenet of sustainable farming being at the core of wine excellence and the expression of a sense of place” says Chris and Andrea Mullineux.
Analjit Singh, partner with the Mullineux’s in Mullineux & Leeu Family Wines, says “Regenerative Organic Certified® status is recognition for the pioneering role Chris and Andrea have played in holistic, sustainable wine farming on the Swartland Roundstone estate.”
To have the Roundstone farm as a model for regenerative organic wine farming accentuates the fact that, together with heritage and the pursuit of optimal quality, sustainability is an integral part of the Mullineux & Leeu ethos.
